Brother Printer Problem

While setting up a home office for a friend I ran across an interesting issue. He was changing from an HP printer and a separate fax machine to an all-in-one Brother MFC 9130cw.
The initial setup went smoothly. I went home and got a call the next day from him that his scanner wasn't working like he wanted it to. He could print from his computer and the other networked computer and he could scan, using the software from the computer. But he couldn't use the buttons on the printer to scan documents to the computer.
Even though, most software tells you to disable your anti-virus when you install it, I have NEVER done this, nor have I ever had an issue installing software.
Did I say that he was running Norton Internet Security? He was.
After an afternoon of reconfiguring the printer and computers and scratching my head, it was brought to my attention that there was a little Norton icon in the taskbar! OMG! How did miss that?
Once I configured the Norton firewall to recognize the printer, everything was great!
I will learn from this experience and check the antivirus and antimalware programs when things don't go like they are supposed to.
