There are many types of viruses and malware. There are also many companies dedicated to the eradication of viruses & malware. I use free versions of Antivirus software and Anti-malware software. Below I have 3 suggested software packages that I use.
AVAST! ANTIVIRUS
I use Avast! Antivirus on all of my personal computers. It is the world's most popular antivirus software. All of their products are top notch. and I recommend them highly. Even the free version updates automatically and provides great protection. Their products include anti-spam, anti spyware and firewall protection along with many other features. Their website is
MALWAREBYTES ANTIMALWARE
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is the most effective tool I have ever seen in the detection and removal of malware that has actually stopped computers from starting. They have a free version and a Pro version. This product is really tops.

AVG ANTIVIRUS
I have used AVG antivirus and can say that it is a very good antivirus program. Many of my friends use it. The paid version provides extensive protection while the free version is a great basic protection.
I found a video on YouTube with, what one person considers the top 5 free antivirus programs. I like all of them. It mostly show the programs and how to install and use them.
